The Importance of EIAs

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) involve gathering and interpreting data on a project’s  impact on the surrounding environment and the significance of those impacts. Their main  function is to provide the comprehensive scientific information necessary to determine the  decision to implement the project and under what conditions. This assessment process is  outlines in the Impact Assessment Act for major projects and projects that are located on federal  lands.  

EIAs play an important role in ensuring development and infrastructure projects are in  compliance with environmental regulations and executed responsibly with as minimal impact on  the environment possible. This could include consideration of alternative engineering processes  or locations, for instance. These findings help inform decision makers as to whether the project  plan should be approved, modified or dismissed.  

EIAs can help mitigate or minimize significant long-term ecosystem damage, supporting  sustainable development. Identifying environmental risks early on in a project’s planning phase  can also help minimize the risk of unforeseen financial costs or legal challenges. EIAs also  encourage developers to prioritize innovative, efficient solutions.  

Through balancing economic, social and environmental needs, EIAs promote a holistic  approach to development ensuring current needs can be met without compromising those of  future generations.
