Indoor Air Quality - BOMA

The importance of proper Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has gained attention and recognition on the potential impacts to our health and well-being. Air Quality is an issue addressed by the Building Owners and Managers Associations (BOMA) that provides guidelines and best practices to ensure proper Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) to protect occupants within buildings.

BOMA standards take into account proper ventilation systems, adequate airflow/ventilation rates, use of high-quality air filters, and regular maintenance of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. In addition, BOMA also promotes the use of environmentally acceptable materials and practices to mitigate and reduce the overall emissions, as well as carbon footprints of buildings. It is part of BOMA’s mandate to carry out IAQ assessments and visual inspections of the HVAC systems on a regular basis.

IAQ Parameters that are of particular interest include: Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, Temperature, Humidity, Particulate Matter, and Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs).

BOMA plays a large role in maintaining collaboration between building owners, managers and occupants. This is carried out by promoting awareness about IAQ and maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
