Training
SEL offers a wide variety of occupational health and safety training courses for our client groups. The training courses have been designed to address the needs of many stakeholders including user groups, maintenance workers, facility and building managers, construction managers, architects and engineers, developers, governmental officials and occupational health & safety practitioners. SEL‘s courses include the following:
- Asbestos Overview – This one hour overview training course is designed for informing and educating employees regarding the presence of asbestos within a specific facility. It will assist facility managers, engineers, health & safety officers, joint health and safety committees and construction managers with communicating the facts about asbestos. The content of the course is general in nature and will help erase fears about asbestos and the hazards associated with it.
- Asbestos Awareness – This 3.5 hour awareness training course has been designed to meet the employer’s requirement under Ontario Regulation 278/05 for providing instruction and training to individuals who may come in contact with asbestos. The course has been designed for construction managers, engineers, maintenance workers, caretakers and other tradesmen that may come in contact with asbestos during their daily activities. The course outline includes a review of the history of asbestos, common uses and typical locations, Ontario/Federal Regulations, personal protective equipment and asbestos control procedures. If your facility contains asbestos, ensure your personnel have received asbestos awareness training.
- Asbestos Control & Identification – This 8.0 hour control and identification course has been designed to provide greater insight into the management of asbestos–containing materials and review the details of Ontario Regulation 278/05. The course has been designed for construction managers, project managers, facility managers and environmental health and safety personnel who are involved with day-to-day operations where asbestos impacts operations. The course outline includes a review of the history of asbestos, common uses and typical locations, Ontario/Federal Regulations, personal protective equipment, asbestos management programs, asbestos abatement contract specifications, tendering abatement projects, user group communication, role of consultants, asbestos control procedures, asbestos surveys, bulk sampling and air monitoring.
- Management of Asbestos in ICI Facilities – This 16.0 hour management of asbestos in ICI facilities has been designed to provide detailed training for those individuals that supervise asbestos abatement projects or senior personnel that wish to learn the details about asbestos–containing materials. The course has been designed for asbestos abatement workers, asbestos abatement supervisors, construction managers, project managers, facility managers and environmental health and safety personnel who are involved directly with asbestos abatement projects. The course outline includes a review of the history of asbestos, common uses and typical locations, Ontario/Federal Regulations, personal protective equipment, asbestos management programs, asbestos abatement contract specifications, role of consultants, asbestos control procedures, asbestos surveys, bulk sampling, air monitoring and 4.0 hours are dedicated to a practical session where Type II and Glove Bag asbestos abatement is simulated.
- Mould Overview – This one hour overview training course is designed for informing and educating employees regarding the hazards associated with mould contaminated building materials. It will assist facility managers, engineers, health & safety officers, joint health and safety committees and construction managers with communicating the facts about mould. The content of the course is general in nature and will help erase fears about mould and the hazards associated with it.
- Mould Awareness – This 3.5 hour awareness training course has been designed to provide specific information regarding mould contaminated building materials. The course has been designed for construction managers, engineers, maintenance workers, caretakers and other tradesmen that may come in contact with building materials during their daily activities. The course outline includes background on mould, typical adverse health affects, where and why mould develops, prevention of mould growth, review of current assessment and remediation guidelines, remediation procedures, personal protective equipment and air sampling protocols.
- Mould Remediation and Moisture Control – This 8.0 hour training course has been designed to provide detailed information about water infiltration, moisture control, prevention of mould growth and mould remediation strategies. It will assist facility managers, plant engineers, environmental health & safety officers and construction managers with communicating the facts about mould. The content of the course is specific in nature and will review current industry guidelines such as those provided by the Canadian Construction Association, the Environmental Abatement Council of Ontario (EACO), Health Canada, the Manitoba Department of Labour, the New York City Department of Health, the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This training course will assist those who have mould present or have a moisture/water infiltration concern within their facility.
- WHMIS – This 3.5 hour training course has been designed to provide general information for WHMIS-controlled products that are used in your workplace. If you use any controlled products, training your employees is a requirement under the WHMIS Regulation. This course will teach your employees how to obtain and understand the information they need to safely work with WHMIS products. The course will cover topics such as the WHMIS legislation and responsibilities, with emphasis on recognizing and understanding the components of WHMIS labels (such as risk phrases and hazard symbols) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs). It can be tailored to provide training on the safe use, handling and storage of the specific products used in your industry.
- Infection Control During Construction in Health Care Facilities – This 8.0 hour training course has been designed to provide information regarding the importance of infection control during construction in Health Care Facilities. The course information covers a broad range of topics and is suitable for a wide audience including health care facility employees (administrators, facility managers, medical and nursing staff, and maintenance personnel) and others involved in construction projects (architects, engineers, constructors and remediation personnel). Topics covered include a review of the causes of nosocomial infections, with specific emphasis on the importance of fungi in settled dust and on contaminated building materials. Specific case studies associated with infections resulting from construction activities will be reviewed. The course will then review the requirements of current guidance documents, with specific emphasis on CSA Standard Z317.13-03. Topics such as the identification of risk groups and construction types and a review of specific requirements for preventative measures I, II, III, and IV will be discussed. Engineering controls, work procedures and site inspection and monitoring techniques will also be reviewed.
- Fall Arrest Training – This 4.0 hour training has been designed to deal with when to wear protective equipment and how to use it. This course will assist employees in properly hooking up a safety harness and when to use it, connection to anchor points, as well as detail the responsibilities of the employer, supervisor and worker. The course will provide participants with a general understanding of the safe and efficient use and care of fall arrest equipment; Meet individual’s obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations; and insure that participants are knowledgeable in when and how to use fall arrest protection.
- Confined Space Training – This 8.0 hour level 1 training course has been designed to provide employees up-to-date Confined Space training requirements. The course covers: Confined Space Introduction & Regulations, Hazards of a Confined Space, Pre-entry Requirements (including Confined Space Program, Hazard Assessment & The Entry Plan, Training Requirements & Record Keeping), Entering a Confined Space (including The Entry Permit & On-site Rescue, Energy / Materials Isolation & Control, and Atmospheric Safety & Ventilation).
